Located in the heart of Manhattan, bordering on beautiful Central Park, the American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's greatest scientific and cultural institutions, one of the most architecturally magnificent buildings, an exciting concurrence of the past and the future, and a continual delight for the curious of all ages. The renovated dinosaur floor---what many visitors consider the museum's crowning glory---showcases over 600 dinosaur fossils from the museum's record-setting collection, and includes a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton. A 94-foot-long and much-loved model of a blue whale hangs from the ceiling of the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life, which was renovated to great acclaim in 2003.

Leave some time to explore space. The glassy Rose Center for Earth and Space, hailed as an architectural masterpiece, adds the equivalent of another museum. The Rose Center chronicles the history of the universe and houses a planetarium with a virtual reality simulator.

If the Museum of Natural History seems a little familiar, you may have seen it on screen. Movies like K-PAX, The Squid and The Whale, Miracle on 34th Street, Splash, Spider-Man 2, Men in Black 2, The Devil Wears Prada, and Night at the Museum all had scenes filmed here.

A spectacular new Space Show, Journey to the Stars, narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg, premiered on Saturday, July 4, 2009, in the Hayden Planetarium at the Frederick Phineas and Sandra Priest Rose Center for Earth and Space. Journey to the Stars is an engrossing, immersive theater experience created by the Museum's astrophysicists, scientific visualization, and media production experts with the cooperation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and more than 40 leading scientists from the United States and abroad.

Follow Sir David Attenborough as he sets out to uncover the truth about the enigmatic pterosaurs---a group of reptiles that ruled the skies about 220 million years ago and, after insects, were the first animals to fly. Attenborough works with scientists and engineers to try and understand how and why pterosaurs flew, traveling to Big Bend National Park in Texas, Lyme Regis in the United Kingdom, and China's remote Liaoning Province to get answers. The audience will be immersed in the awe-inspiring world of the pterosaur and experience the enormous challenges these creatures faced to survive, let alone flourish, in prehistoric skies.
