Hydra Island Greece, one of the most unspoiled and interesting of the Greek islands, is a small rocky island in the Argo Saronic Gulf, south east out of the Athens port of Piraeus and within sight of the southern Peloponnese mainland.

It is very cosmopolitan, safe and one of the easiest of the Greek islands to get to. Best of all, the entire island is a preserved national monument.

The town, which is the center of the whole island, is built amphitheatrically around the port. It looks glamorous like a painting, with gray, white and blue colors above the blue of the sea, an exemplar of architectonics and aesthetics.

See the Parapets with the Canons from both sides of the port's entrance. On the left side of the port, after the statue of A. Miaoulis, see the Harbour Authorities of Hydra, accommodated in the old, stonebuilt powder magazine. See the marble Archive Building of Hydra, and the house of the Tsamados family which accommodates the famous Sea Captain Academy.

Go to the "Gymnastirio" and to the piny area of the Temple of Saint Fotini, the "Kala Pigadia," the Temple of Prophet Elias, and the Temple of Saint Eutaksia. See the Cathedral which was built in 1648 and reconstructed in 1774, and operated as the Holy Church of dormition. Today, the headquarters of the Town Hall and the Ecclesiastic museum are located in the Temple. To the right of the Temple of Virgin Mary, begins a tight, paved, ascending road, which leads to the old city, Kiafa.

Go through the coastal road which passes under the House of Koundouriotis, and from there reaches Spilia, Milous and Kamini before arriving at Vlihos.

The main characteristic of Hydra is that there are no wheeled vehicles, and the mode of transportation is by donkeys, a thing that makes the island even more romantic. The port of Hydra is filled with little and big yachts, boats and cruisers.

Enjoy romantic walks in the narrow, picturesque, paved alleys. Generally, Hydra is famous for the calm life it offers to the visitors in the day, but it is also known for the intense, cosmopolitan night life.

Hydra, with its continuous contribution to tourism and to the culture of our country, remains the adornment of the Saronic Gulf and one of the most important resorts that Greece has to offer. HYDRA is unforgettable!
